How to Get Your First Client as a New Interior Designer or Decorator

Landing your first interior design client is one of the biggest milestones for new interior designers or decorators. You may have the skills, creativity, and training, but without clients, your business cannot grow.

The good news is that getting your first client is absolutely possible, even without a large portfolio or past experience. In this post, you will learn clear, practical strategies to help you secure your first paying interior design client and begin building a sustainable business.

1. Get Clear on Who You Want to Work With

Before you begin marketing your services, clarity is essential.

Ask yourself:

    • Do I want to work with residential or commercial clients?

    • What types of projects do I enjoy most?

    • Who can realistically afford my services right now?

When you define your ideal client, it becomes much easier to attract the right first client, rather than taking on work that does not align with your goals.

2. Build a Starter Portfolio Without Paid Work

You do not need dozens of completed projects to land your first client.

Here are effective ways to build a starter portfolio:

    • Design your own home or a single room makeover

    • Create concept projects using digital designs

    • Assist friends or family members at a discounted rate

    • Offer a limited introductory service to gain experience

Focus on showing your design process, style, and problem solving skills. Clients want to see how you think, not just finished spaces.

3. Establish a Strong Online Presence

Your future clients are online, so it is important to show up clearly and professionally.

At a minimum, you should have:

    • A simple website or landing page

    • One primary social platform such as Instagram or Facebook

    • A clear description of who you help and what services you offer

You do not need a perfect brand or polished website. Clear messaging and consistency matter more than perfection at this stage.
  •

4. Start With Your Existing Network

Many designers find their first client through people they already know.

Let others know:

    • You have officially launched your interior design business

    • What services you provide

    • Who you are looking to work with

Share your work online, send a thoughtful email announcement, and speak confidently about your business whenever the opportunity arises.

5. Offer a Paid Introductory Service

Low commitment services make it easier for new clients to say yes.

Examples include:

    • One hour design coachings

    • Virtual design services

    • Room refresh or styling sessions

These services build trust and often lead to larger, full service projects once clients experience your value.
  •

6. Build Strategic Partnerships

Partnerships with other professionals can help you reach clients faster.

Consider connecting with:

    • Realtors

    • Contractors

    • Architects

    • Home stagers

    • Tradesmen (painters, electricians, artists, etc)
Explain how your services support their work and improve the experience for their clients.

7. Price Your Services With Confidence

Many new interior designers underprice their services out of fear.

Instead:

    • Research interior design pricing in your region

    • Create clear service packages or pricing structures

    • Communicate your value clearly and professionally

Clients are more likely to trust designers who are confident in their pricing and processes.
  •

8. Ask for Testimonials and Referrals Early

Once you complete your first project:

    • Ask for a testimonial or online review

    • Request referrals

    • Share the project and feedback on your website and social media

Social proof helps establish credibility and makes it easier to attract future clients.

Getting your first interior design client comes down to visibility, clarity, and confidence. You do not need to be perfect or have years of experience. You simply need to show up consistently and communicate your value.
