Shop the Look: California Coastal Master Bedroom

Lately I’ve been so drawn to the “California Coastal” design style. It’s surprisingly a very classic style but has modern elements like golds and black metals to root its overall light and airy feel.

The key elements of the “California Coastal” style are lots of bright and airy colors with a mix of warm textures and classic elements. This design board I created is a perfect example of how to use the different elements of California Coastal design to make a warm and inviting master bedroom. Notice the entire color scheme is neutral. I layered in warm brown and cream tones, soft grays, crisp whites, and just a touch of black to ground the colors.

Because you’re working with a neutral color scheme, you want to bring in lots of variation in your textures. Warm rustic woods are a key element to the style as it adds a necessary warmth to the room. You can add warm wood tones in your flooring, large furniture pieces, and accessories.

Next you want to make sure you add in a variation of upholsteries. In this design I added a slubby woven fabric on the chair and ottoman, soft crisp cottons in the duvet, tufted wool in the rug, a heavy woven and lots of linens and embroidery in the accent pillows and bench. Last, you need to add in a few sleek elements to balance out all the upholstery. In this room I added in ceramic lamps, a stone accent table, and a modern black floor lamp.

If you keep these elements in mind for your next design, you will nail the California Coastal look!
